Early Paintings and Commissions
These works are from the 1970s at Prahran CAE (now Swinburne University, Prahran, Victoria)

These two works explored the mediums of photography and painting, using paper patterns to unify the work. In both cases, the actual garment was incorporated into the painting.

Matchbox Aim: To present the box in terms of reduction and spatial ambiguity. It is reduced in colour and dimension - spatial ambiguity is achieved through presentation.

The box allows one to look into it, to see the various layers, to see what the layers contain, or to simply acknowledge the box as a complete form. Each piece is a part of the whole, yet may be regarded as a complete unit in itself.

This work was commissioned for Easter by the Sacred Heart Church at Diamond Creek, Victoria, in 1997.

These two works were hung in the church during the season of Lent. The colours present in the painting are sombre tonings of purple merging with black, to reflect the darkness of Lent. The wall hanging on the left was hand-knitted; the fabric symbolising the Shroud which was attached to wire netting, symbolic of the Crown of Thorns. The shroud was attached with forty black pegs, representing the forty days of Lent. The works were designed for the viewer to reflect on what Lent meant to each personally; as the visual aspects were reduced with only a dark form to observe, it was intended to provide a source of Lenten meditation.
